The Second Sunday of Advent – We Can’t Go Alone

Advent is a season of preparation, a time to reflect on what it means to journey faithfully. And one of life’s most essential lessons—one we are reminded of this week—is that we were never meant to go alone.

Our culture often pushes us into isolation, encouraging independence at the expense of connection. But scripture tells a different story. Take Ruth, for example. After losing her husband, cultural norms would have sent her back to her family of origin. Instead, she chooses to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth’s bold commitment—“Where you go, I will go”—forms a new family and a covenant rooted in love and loyalty.

Together, Ruth and Naomi journey to Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest, foreshadowing another journey to Bethlehem—Mary and Joseph’s trek to be counted in the census. Both pairs are unlikely, unconventional families, but their stories remind us that God brings people together in surprising ways. God forms us into covenant communities—relationships bound not by convenience but by love and faithfulness.

You’re Invited

This Sunday, as we gather for the second week of Advent, we’ll reflect on what it means to share the journey. Who are the people God has placed in your life to walk with you? How is God calling you to deepen the relationships that sustain you

Join us as we hear the stories of Ruth and Naomi, Mary and Joseph, and explore how God is still weaving us together into communities of faith, love, and support. You don’t have to go it alone.

Let this Advent be a reminder: we are not just preparing for Christmas; we are preparing our hearts to belong—to God, to one another, and to the journey we share together.

We can’t go alone. And thankfully, we don’t have to. We’ll see you this Sunday

And as we look forward to 2025, please remember to turn in your generosity cards. Your generosity makes everything we do together possible, supporting the ministries that help us to be a beacon of love, hope, and respect in our community.

Thank you to the many people who helped to fill our Food Pantry this week.

Whether you join us in person or online, we look forward to worshiping with you this weekend.

In grace and peace,

Pastor DJ

“We want to pray for unity, compassion, empathy and grace to cover all of us.

And we acknowledge God…These aspirational hopes…Must first begin with lament, repentance and reconciliation.”

For those who can't see the way forward

For those who don't know the way today

For those who are filled with hope each day. And for those who are filled with dread. And for those who feel both hope and dread in passing minutes

Let’s not forget that we while COVID-19 exists, systems of injustice still exist too. The need for the hands and feet of Christ is still very relevant.
